Math IS hard

When I started my current 365, I vowed that I would be better.  I didn’t mean that I would take better pictures, that the subjects of my pictures would be more interesting, or that I would really change the way that I approached the 365.  What I meant was that I would be better at posting the pictures that I took in a timely manner.  No more falling weeks behind for this gal.

Four months in, and I can say that I have failed miserably at this vow.  Instead of falling days and weeks behind, I regularly find myself over a month behind. It’s gotten to the point where it has started to stress me out. Sure, I have been faithfully taking photos daily, and quite often have selected “the” photo for the day, but when I don’t upload them I start to worry that I somehow missed a day, or deleted a picture that I wanted to keep, and I worry.

Last night I decided to face the task head on, and upload at least some of the fifty or so pictures that had not made it to Flickr yet.  I had fun looking through last seven weeks or so as I was uploading, so I decided to review some of the older photos of the collection. In doing this, I noticed that there was an error in my count, and that I had accidentally marked two shots as number eighty-five.  Grumbling to myself, I went and edited the descriptions on fifty pictures, the bulk of which I had just uploaded and incorrectly captioned.

With that task done, I decided to move them all into the set (or album) that I had created when I started the project; a set that was also way out of date. It was then that I noticed that there were too many pictures in the set.  I had uploaded to day 135, but the set contained 136.  Now annoyed that I had made yet another error, I went to the beginning to check all of the descriptions. I had just corrected the most recent shots, so I was confident that the error must be in the earlier uploads. They were all correct and sequential, so I checked to the end and found no error. That was impossible, so I checked again with the same result.  Confused, I counted all of the thumbnails in the set and still had one fewer picture than what Flickr was telling me.

I started this post ready to tell the world that Flickr can’t count either, but something made me check just one more time.  I found my error pretty quickly tonight.  I bet this would not happen if I uploaded daily…

UPDATE – it turns out that Flickr CANNOT add, either.

Easily led

I knew when I started another 365 that there would be ruts and times when I was stuck for inspiration.  Having been through this before, I have several strategies to help me work through the ruts, one of which is a short list of things that I love to photograph that I use only when I am in a rut.  This was how I found myself on the weedy side of the house, photographing Queen Anne’s lace one night last week.  I was in a rut, and Queen Anne’s lace is on the list.

Satisfied that I had taken a photo that I would be happy with, I walked towards the front of the house and came upon Goose, sitting on the front step.  “Oh there you are”, she said, “I wanted to know if you wanted to go on a photo walk with me.” It was close to bedtime and there was laundry to deal with, but I could not say no.  We set off, and she directed me.

Take this, now that, one with me in it please, for the next forty minutes.  These are the shots she wanted:

I had such a fun time with her, and she successfully kicked me out of my rut.  I can’t wait to see where she takes me next.

Why not today?

Over the last few days, I have noticed that the bunnies, new and old, have become very active in my neighbourhood.  We see at least one every time that we are outside, but most often there are two or three at a time, munching on clover or playing in the dandelions.  I’ve been wanting snap some shots of them, but it seems that I am either without my camera or with Goose, who likes to chase the bunnies to make them hop.

As I stepped outside tonight, a bunny ran by me and down the side of the house. I followed, and it turned out that there were three baby bunnies running around in the back yard, so I waiting until they got comfortable with me in their space. The bunnies kept getting closer (one even stepped on my foot!), so I took out my phone, and snapped a few shots with my phone while they played.

I wasn’t entirely happy with the pictures, so I went inside and got my camera.  It’s something that I have been doing more and more lately, grabbing my camera and going out looking for pictures.  Actively taking pictures that aren’t from an event, or because someone asked me to document something, or I needed to record a milestone. Pictures for fun, pictures for me.  I have been toying with starting a 365 again too.  This seemed like a good day to start.

Halfway

Last week, I officially moved past the halfway mark of my 365! It kind of snuck up on me, as I have been lax in uploading pictures for the last few weeks entire time, so I lost track of where I was at. The halfway picture was actually taken before I realized where I was at, and I didn’t get a chance to plan a special shot. I am ok with that, as that is how almost all of my pictures in the 365 have come to be.

I wasn’t quite sure how far that I would get when I started this project. Despite the fact that you get to set your own rules, it is an intimidating task. My rules were simple: Take pictures every day. Pick the best/favourite/most significant and post it. Don’t cheat! I was worried that I would miss a day, or that it would be a chore to take pictures. I haven’t and it isn’t! This project has allowed me to rediscover just how much I love taking pictures, and has left me with some (what I think to be) fabulous shots.

It has also really made me want to take better pictures.  I took a class at a local photography school, and it gave me some helpful tips.  In December, I bought a new camera and LOTS of great new bright lenses. They motivate me to try new things, and take pictures when I previously was limited.  My new camera is FABULOUS, and I can’t wait until the weather is better and I get to take pictures outside for long periods of time.

The last month or so has been a challenge for me, but I have kept on going.  The times when I would sneak outside and take pictures for fifteen minutes are not as convenient as they were in the summer and fall.  The dark has been my biggest enemy, followed shortly by the cold days.  I like the cold, but my hands don’t like being out in it for too long.  It’s been close a couple of days, but I haven’t missed a day.  The latest that I took my first shot of the day was 11:50pm!!  It’s still a fun challenge, so that keeps me going.
